Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR Therapy is backed by numerous research studies that show improvement in anxiety, panic, phobias, somatic symptoms, stuck negative beliefs, depression, PTSD and more.

It was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, and involves guiding you through sets of bilateral stimulation, which can include eye movements, tactile tapping, or auditory tones.

This bilateral stimulation stimulates both sides of the brain, facilitating the reprocessing of distressing memories and emotions, allowing for the brain to integrate and heal what's stuck inside.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

In EMDR Therapy, we work with you to identify the specific memories, emotions, or negative beliefs that are causing distress. Through bilateral stimulation, we explore and process these memories, allowing your brain to rewire and heal from their emotional impact.

EMDR offers relief from overwhelming emotions, stuck or ridged beliefs about yourself, somatic symptoms, distressing memories, fear and more.

What Can EMDR Therapy Help With?

EMDR Therapy has shown effectiveness in relieving a wide range of issues, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD: EMDR can help individuals heal from traumatic experiences and bring relief for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  • Anxiety and Phobias: EMDR can provide relief from anxiety-related challenges and phobias by addressing the underlying causes.

  • Depression: EMDR can help work through past traumas and times your brain learned to shut down what you were feeling, leading to relief from depressive symptoms.

  • Performance Enhancement: EMDR can assist in removing mental blocks and improving performance in sports, academics, and career pursuits.

What to Expect in an EMDR Therapy Session?

During an EMDR Therapy session, your therapist will typically guide you through a brief history taking. You will collaboratively identify the distressing target memories or body sensations to focus on. Bilateral stimulation will be used to help process what's connected to your distress and your therapist will then help you instill positive self-beliefs.

Some people experience improvement in several sessions and others will need more time to work through what has brought them into therapy.
